Ronnie

Dog Training

Excitement reactivity, ecollar conditioning

Date

June 2025

Background:
Ronnie initially presented as extremely excitement-reactive around other dogs. His greetings were intense, largely due to his size, and he lacked any understanding of polite interactions. As time went on, it also became clear that Ronnie struggled significantly when off lead in the presence of distractions. His poor manners around other dogs, combined with the fact that he could not safely be let off lead, made everyday walks challenging and stressful for both Ronnie and his owner.

Assessment:
During assessment, it was evident that Ronnie lacked clarity in his training and that communication between Ronnie and his handler was inconsistent. He had learned to pull through a slip lead, and due to his size and strength, this made it very easy for him to physically overpower his owner during walks. Ronnie did not have a clear understanding of expectations or boundaries, particularly in stimulating environments.

Training Approach:
Our training focused on establishing strong foundations to provide Ronnie with clarity, structure, and consistency:

- 1. Markers:
We introduced a clear and consistent marker system to improve communication. This allowed Ronnie’s owner to clearly and effectively communicate which behaviours were desired and which were not, helping Ronnie understand expectations more easily.
- 2. Change of tools:
Ronnie was conditioned to a prong collar, which allowed us to clearly teach him what leash pressure meant and how to “turn off” that pressure through correct choices. This provided Ronnie with much clearer guidance on walks and removed the confusion he previously experienced.
- 3. Exposure to other dogs:
Once Ronnie demonstrated that he could work calmly around Monty, we gradually introduced him to additional dogs across a variety of training environments. Initially, Ronnie was kept in a focused working state, with exposure carefully managed to keep arousal levels low. Over time, he was given increasing freedom to make appropriate choices around other dogs. His owner worked diligently on structured socialisation, ensuring Ronnie learned that calm, polite behaviour resulted in more positive interactions - and even opportunities for play.
- 4. Ecollar Conditioning:
After all foundational skills were reliably in place, we introduced ecollar conditioning. This step was essential to ensure Ronnie could safely enjoy 100% off-lead freedom while maintaining reliable recall and responsiveness in high-distraction environments.

Progress & Outcome:
Ronnie made remarkable progress throughout the training process. He quickly understood the new systems in place and showed consistent improvement over the following months. Ronnie can now be trusted off lead around other dogs and is able to recall reliably - even when engaged in play.

Conclusion:
By providing Ronnie with clear structure, consistent communication, and the right tools, alongside his owner’s strong commitment to the training process, Ronnie has undergone a complete transformation. He has gone from an overexcited, reactive dog who struggled around other dogs to one who can calmly walk past them without issue. With his reliable recall and improved social skills, Ronnie can now safely enjoy life off lead - just as he deserves.
