caring for your dog during a heat wave:

When temperatures rise, our dogs feel it just as much (if not more) than we do. Unlike humans, dogs can’t regulate their body temperature as efficiently, which makes them especially vulnerable to heat-related illnesses. Whether you’re enjoying a sunny day in the park or just relaxing at home, it’s essential to keep your four-legged friend cool, comfortable, and safe.

Why Heat Is Dangerous for Dogs

Dogs primarily cool themselves by panting, and only a small amount of heat is released through their paw pads. This makes it harder for them to cope in hot weather, especially in humid conditions. Overheating can quickly lead to heatstroke, a serious and potentially fatal condition.

Certain dogs are more at risk, including:

  • Flat-faced breeds like Bulldogs and Pugs

  • Older dogs or puppies

  • Dogs with thick coats

  • Overweight pets or those with underlying health issues

Below are five dos and don'ts that you should or shouldn't be doing with them:

DO's

  • walk your dog early before the heat

  • keep your dog inside during the hottest part of the day

  • offer cool mats, shaded areas, A/C, paddling pool if possible

  • make sure your dog has access to water

  • be aware of signs of bloat and heat stroke

DON'Ts

  • walk your dog in the heat of the day

  • offer water / food immediately after exercise

  • leave your dog in the car

  • walk your dog on hot pavements

  • allow vigorous running around time

Hot weather can be enjoyable for both you and your dog; but the right precautions must be taken. By staying aware of the risks and taking simple steps to keep your pet cool, you can ensure they stay happy and healthy all summer long.

Remember: if you’re feeling the heat, your dog probably is too. So if ever in doubt, keep things cool, relaxed, and shaded.
