Why do I love play?

Personally, I find it hugely important for learning about the dog. Each dog I work with, I want to know what makes them tick and feel motivated to work with me. Is it food? Is it play? Is it love and cuddles? I am yet to work with a dog that flat out refuses to play with me even if I have to put in more work to encourage it. All dogs have some form of drive - whether it’s high or low, so somehow I’m going to find something they either love or can marginally tolerate participating in!

Why is play so valuable?

1.) it builds more handler engagement, plus a stronger desire to work with the handler

2.) can provide an outlet for your dog's genetic fullfillment

3.) reduces stress and tension in your dog's body

4.) a way of physically and mentally exercising your dog to increase their endorphins and serotine levels

5.) you can utilise play to build confidence for a dog when they are around triggers

6.) build a stronger relationship and partnership together

7.) you can build impulse control and help your dog learn to control their arousal levels

Long story short, building relationships is a huge thing for me. For some dogs, this comes really quickly, for others it takes time to build. And either way, I’m okay with it; but, learning how to play with the dog in front of you is so valuable in helping them work with you.
